29 startups reach unicorn status in august, highlighting AI and semiconductors growth
In August 2026, 29 companies joined The Crunchbase Unicorn Board, adding approximately $63 billion in value. Over a third of these new unicorns were less than three years old, reflecting the rapid pace at which startups are achieving multibillion-dollar valuations. Notable additions included XPeng Robotics, valued at over $6.3 billion, and Lumilens, valued at $5.5 billion. AI model platform River AI and semiconductor startup Source Foundry each reached $5 billion valuations. The U.S. accounted for 16 of the new unicorns, with China contributing four, and other countries adding one each. Nine companies exited the board in August, including Unitree Robotics, which went public, and Hugging Face, which was acquired.
The Unicorn Board includes private companies with post-money valuations of $1 billion or more, based on Crunchbase data. It does not reflect internal valuations or investor writedowns, which vary quarterly. Funding to unicorns includes all private financings, as well as those that have since exited to The Exited Unicorn Board. Exits analyzed here only include the first time a company exited. All funding values are in U.S. dollars, converted from foreign currencies at the spot rate on the date of the event.
