Advocacy grows for AI tools tailored to older adults
OpenAI launched ChatGPT for Teens on August 18, introducing enhanced safety measures, parental controls, and age-appropriate responses. This move highlights the increasing recognition that different age groups may require distinct AI experiences, especially regarding sensitive topics and digital literacy.
While teens are a focus, attention is now turning to older adults, who are also adopting AI chatbots at a growing rate. Pew Research Center data shows that 23% of adults aged 65 and over used ChatGPT earlier this year, up from 10% the previous year. A non-peer-reviewed survey indicated that 63% of older adults used ChatGPT for medical advice.
AARP supports the use of AI for companionship and mental stimulation, noting that the percentage of people over 50 using AI rose from 18% in 2024 to 30% in 2025. Even individuals from older generations, such as the author’s father, are finding value in AI tools for tasks like researching specialized surgeons or organizing daycare options.
