Agility's new humanoid robot enhances safety around humans
Agility Robotics has introduced its first humanoid robot designed to operate safely alongside humans, minimizing the risk of harm to human coworkers. The robot, named Digit 5, is engineered to avoid collisions and ensure workplace safety in environments such as warehouses and automotive factories, eliminating the need for physical barriers and isolated work cells. When detecting a person at a distance, Digit 5 can autonomously adjust its movements, such as stopping or moving away to allow safe passage. In close proximity scenarios, the robot can squat or assume a seated position to prevent accidental contact. Pras Velagapudi, chief technology officer at Agility, explained that the robot features a sophisticated safe motion system capable of implementing various safety measures based on the type of human presence detected. This innovation highlights the growing trend of integrating advanced robotics into collaborative workspaces with enhanced safety protocols.
The development marks a significant step in the evolution of humanoid robots, emphasizing the importance of human-robot interaction safety. By prioritizing safety features, Agility aims to expand the potential applications of such robots in industrial settings, fostering a more integrated and efficient work environment. The introduction of Digit 5 reflects the company's commitment to advancing robotics technology while ensuring the well-being of human workers.
