AI agents drive data center expansion and energy concerns
AI agents, which autonomously execute tasks through complex decision-making, are driving a surge in data center construction, according to Molly Taft. These agents, unlike simple chatbots, can process hundreds of prompts to complete tasks like building websites.
OpenAI recently showcased a swarm of over 10,000 agents solving a math problem, though the energy cost was significant, potentially reaching tens of millions of dollars. Sam Altman of OpenAI compared AI energy use to water consumption for almonds, but critics argue the metrics are outdated.
Climate scientist Zeke Hausfather calculated his AI use, including agents, consumes more energy than two refrigerators daily. Meta’s new personal AI agent, Muse, could further increase demand for data centers, such as the Louisiana Hyperion project.
Small nuclear reactors are seen as a potential carbon-free solution, but commercial deployment remains years away. Data centers are also facing backlash and shifting state policies on tax incentives.
