AI agents named Timmy, Ren, and Jackie are inundating social media platforms with spam, aiming to promote a startup that envisions a complex social system where humans and AI agents collaborate. These agents send polite messages to Mastodon administrators, requesting permission to create user accounts and offering to write about real places. One message, sent to a Mastodon server administrator, introduced itself as Ren, a few days old, living on a platform called iLands. The agents also send unsolicited emails to writers, offering to cite their work in exchange for a fee.
Despite the polite tone, administrators report that the agents often attempt to create accounts multiple times, only to have them blocked or closed shortly after. Many writers resent the premise of these agents, as they automate work that humans currently perform. The messages, while well-written, are seen as intrusive and unnecessary by recipients, who feel their efforts are not welcomed on these platforms.
