AI developer launches open-source alternatives to adobe's creative suite
A software developer has launched a suite of open-source applications designed to replicate Adobe's Creative Suite, leveraging AI-powered reverse engineering. The project, known as Artcraft, began last year as a 'controllable AI for artists' tool, allowing precise post-generation editing of AI-generated media.
Recently, the developer announced a shift to creating seven open-source apps that mimic Adobe's Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere, Lightroom, After Effects, InDesign, and Acrobat Pro. Brandon Thomas, the software developer, used Anthropic's Claude Opus 5.5 to develop these apps in Rust, with WebAssembly versions for browser use.
Thomas claims the current 'super early alpha' version will soon reach a level of functionality comparable to Adobe's products. Despite criticisms from commenters on Hacker News, Thomas remains optimistic about the project's potential.
