According to a report by CCTV, a recent AI-based matchmaking scam has been uncovered, specifically targeting middle-aged women. The criminal group used AI-generated profiles to deceive victims and defraud them of their money. In a recent operation, the police in Chengdu, Sichuan, dismantled an AI matchmaking fraud ring and arrested 28 suspects, including Wang Bo. The case was triggered when a woman named Bian reported that she had paid 2,000 yuan for a matchmaking service after being contacted by an account named 'Matching Center Wang Director,' who introduced her to a man named 'Li Ge.' However, 'Li Ge' could not be reached, and 'Wang Director' stopped responding to messages. Upon investigation, the police discovered that the company Bian had signed with did not exist, but a similar company was found in the area. This company, which claimed to offer matchmaking services, had no actual matchmakers or clients, only sales, editing, and live-streaming positions. During the investigation, the police found that the AI-generated images of the male candidates were identical to the ones Bian had seen. The company's employees were using AI-generated male profiles to interact with potential victims, while the actual conversations were handled by customer service staff. The police also discovered that the company's live-streaming accounts featured AI-generated male figures, and the entire operation was meticulously planned with scripts and talking points. The fraud ring had been operating for less than a year, accumulating over 1 million yuan in illegal gains and affecting more than 50 individuals. Wang Bo and the other 28 suspects have been taken into criminal custody by the police. CCTV highlighted the dangers of this AI-based fraud, emphasizing that such scams continue to exist on short video platforms. It called for platforms to enhance detection and early warning systems, implement risk-based handling mechanisms, and report suspicious AI-generated content to relevant authorities. Experts recommended improving technical capabilities and strengthening cross-platform collaboration to combat these scams. They urged platforms to strictly enforce the labeling of AI-generated content and enhance AI content identification and risk control systems. They also advised users to be vigilant and use technical tools to verify the authenticity of AI-generated content.
