The FBI's 2025 annual report revealed a surge in AI-related fraud, with over 22,000 complaints and losses exceeding $893 million. Investment fraud accounted for $632 million, with individuals over 60 suffering $352 million in losses. Deloitte estimates AI could push U.S. fraud losses to $40 billion by 2027, up from $12.3 billion in 2023. A finance professor notes that AI has lowered the cost and improved the quality of scams, making them more dangerous. Voice cloning now requires just seconds of audio, and AI-generated voices are identifiable only 60% of the time. In 2024, a deepfake video led to a $25 million fraud at Arup. These scams, though not new, have evolved with AI, posing significant risks to households.
