AI hedge fund under scrutiny after market downturn
Situational Awareness, a hedge fund focused on artificial intelligence, is facing regulatory scrutiny from the Securities and Exchange Commission following a sharp decline in its value.
The firm, led by Leopold Aschenbrenner, a former OpenAI employee, experienced rapid growth through aggressive AI investments but saw its value erode as AI stocks declined in late July. The SEC has reportedly issued subpoenas to banks that conducted business with the fund, seeking information on its trading activities and funding sources.
While the government has not accused the fund of any wrongdoing, it has urged the banks to preserve all relevant data. Situational Awareness did not comment on the inquiries but stated it would cooperate fully with any regulatory requests. The fund’s situation highlights the risks associated with the rapid growth of the AI industry.
