AI in hospitals drives surge in healthcare costs

A recent analysis by the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association (BCBSA) reveals that the use of artificial intelligence in hospitals has led to an additional $942 million in healthcare spending over two years. The report highlights a sharp increase in the number of patients recorded with complex conditions in medical records, alongside a notable disconnect between medical coding and actual treatments. There is no evidence that the corresponding treatments have changed. The New York Times suggests that AI is contributing to rising healthcare costs. While hospitals and insurers have long debated treatment costs and reimbursement rates, the adoption of AI by both sides has intensified these tensions. Shiv Rao, founder of AI startup Abridge, warns that if AI development is not managed properly, it could lead to a dystopian scenario where AI systems conflict with each other. However, he also acknowledges the potential for AI to ease tensions and reduce overall costs. Luke Chalker, a senior vice president at BCBSA, does not frame the situation as a battle. Instead, he describes it as a one-sided struggle, with insurers bearing the brunt of the costs.
