AI is transforming the way public relations professionals evaluate journalist influence. As AI services become the new search engines, journalists are now being quantified based on how often their work appears in AI-generated answers. Muck Rack introduced AI Visibility Badges in March, and Cision followed with a dashboard in July to track which journalists are cited most. PR firms are now using these metrics to shape narratives and demonstrate the impact of their work. For instance, Walmart’s communications team monitored AI and LLM activity after announcing its CEO’s retirement. AI favors topical authority over general influence, often citing niche journalists over those from prestigious outlets. This shift has led to a 2% overlap between journalists PR teams target and those cited by AI. The PR industry, long focused on Tier 1 media, is now adapting to this new paradigm. The rise of AI has also spurred a new industry focused on optimizing content for AI visibility, with valuations exceeding $1 billion. PR teams can now clearly show cause and effect when their efforts result in published articles cited by AI. This shift has pushed PR professionals into more strategic roles within their companies. As AI continues to evolve, the definition of influence in media is changing, offering both challenges and opportunities for journalists and PR firms alike.
