AI overreliance may be gradually eroding professional expertise

A study published in the journal *Human Affairs* warns that overreliance on artificial intelligence could be quietly eroding professional skills. Kaisa Kärki, a researcher at the Institute of Theoretical Philosophy, highlights the risk of skill degradation as professionals increasingly delegate tasks to AI systems. Kärki notes that this phenomenon is difficult to detect, as individuals may not realize their growing dependence on AI. In the medical field, for instance, a doctor relying on an AI model without verifying its accuracy could face serious consequences. Kärki argues that current legal frameworks, which hold individuals responsible for their actions, may not adequately address the challenges posed by AI-induced cognitive biases. She calls for systemic solutions, suggesting that training programs should include phases where AI is not allowed to ensure foundational skills are maintained. The researcher emphasizes that the broader implications of this trend could include a loss of the ability to train new professionals without AI assistance. Kärki urges industries to proactively address this issue before widespread skill degradation occurs, stressing the need for a collective response to the growing reliance on AI.
