AI pcs face adoption hurdles despite omdia's 60% forecast by 2027

Omdia forecasts that AI PCs will account for 60% of shipments by 2027, up from 33% in 2025, with projections reaching 79% by 2030. However, consumer demand remains low, as only 9% of respondents prioritize AI features when upgrading. Most upgrades are driven by hardware issues or the need for better performance.
While 69% of users are willing to pay more for AI-capable PCs, AI is not the primary factor in purchase decisions. The growth of AI PC adoption is expected to be driven by natural replacement cycles rather than explicit consumer demand.
Additionally, cloud-based AI solutions face challenges such as rising costs, compliance issues, and data sovereignty concerns. Open-source models, quantization, and NPUs are helping to make local AI more feasible.
The real challenge lies in balancing memory costs, as memory now accounts for nearly 40% of PC costs, potentially limiting configurations. OEMs, ODMs, and chipmakers must navigate these trade-offs to ensure affordability and viability of AI PCs in the market.
