Ai-powered disinformation campaigns targeting latin america and beyond

A major AI-driven disinformation campaign has been uncovered, involving Russian and Iranian actors using advanced techniques to manipulate public opinion. The Russian operation, dubbed 'Dark Clark,' used ChatGPT to create internal reports, generate content, and manage a fake 'think tank' called the Social Research Center (SRC), which co-opted individuals in Latin America. The Iranian operation, meanwhile, deployed seven 'journalist' personas to spread geopolitical messaging through long-form articles and social media comments. Both campaigns were assessed as high-impact, with the Russian operation reaching Category 5 on the IO Breakout Scale, the highest level. These operations aimed to undermine Ukraine's reputation, influence local politics, and exploit media outlets, demonstrating the growing sophistication of AI-enabled false-front operations. The Russian actors also used fake emails to trick schools in Peru and Ecuador into holding events promoting Ukrainian nationalist figures, which were later reported in the media, exacerbating tensions between Ukraine and Poland. Open-source research confirmed the spread of these fake stories, highlighting the potential reach and impact of AI-powered disinformation. The exposure of these operations underscores the need for robust defenses against such threats, as well as the importance of responsible disclosure in disrupting these campaigns.
