The logistics industry, valued at trillions of dollars, traditionally relies on extensive communication through calls, texts, and emails to manage freight shipments. Mike Neill, chief technology officer at C.H. Robinson, a leading freight broker, highlighted that the company receives hundreds of thousands of emails daily asking for shipping quotes.
These inquiries often require detailed information about the freight, insurance, handling requirements, and delivery schedules, leading to significant back-and-forth communication. C.H. Robinson has now implemented AI to automate much of this process, allowing for faster responses and improved efficiency.
The company gradually introduced AI agents, starting with bots that identified quote requests and evolving to systems that extract information and respond automatically. This shift has enabled shippers to receive responses within seconds, boosting business volume and transaction margins. C.H.
Robinson, the largest freight broker in North America, manages 37 million shipments annually and developed much of its AI infrastructure in-house. Other logistics firms are also adopting AI solutions from specialized tech companies to enhance efficiency and reduce costs, allowing human workers to focus on complex tasks and relationship-building.
Neill noted that humans were previously missing out on many opportunities due to delays, and the integration of AI has addressed this issue effectively.
