Airbnb's brian chesky on the future of AI interfaces and the need for a new operating system
Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky emphasized that chatbots are inadequate for travel discovery due to limited interaction and lack of collaborative features. He stressed the need for interfaces enabling multiple users to interact simultaneously, such as families or friends planning trips. Chesky noted Airbnb is exploring both deterministic and generative interfaces, with the latter representing a new trend in app design. He argued the industry lacks a true AI operating system, which would allow agents to interact seamlessly. Chesky believes the future of AI will involve more interoperable agents and richer user interfaces, with voice playing a key role in customer service and search. He also noted AI is helping reduce communication layers, allowing him to get information faster without meetings.
Chesky pointed out current AI tools like Instinct and Muse are not yet fully functional, and the industry needs more robust software infrastructure. He criticized existing AI apps, built for iOS, macOS, and Windows, but not for AI agents. He suggested a new platform, possibly developed by Apple or Google, is needed to enable a true shift from apps to agents. Chesky also mentioned Airbnb plans to roll out voice agents this fall to enhance user experience.
