A new study, shared exclusively with Axios, highlights the importance of understanding what audiences are asking about before leveraging AI to cite sources. The research, conducted by Muck Rack and Generative Pulse, reveals that AI-generated responses depend heavily on the question and the platform used. Researchers tested the same 1,020 prompts across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity, finding significant differences in the sources cited. The findings challenge the conventional belief that news coverage is the most reliable way to gain visibility. However, the study also notes that results can be inconsistent, as only 41% of cited domains overlapped when the same questions were asked twice on the same day. The analysis combined data from 1,020 general consumer questions with broader brand-related queries, covering over 40 million responses. The report emphasizes that GEO is evolving, urging companies to focus on audience interests rather than just visibility metrics. The study underscores the need for a more dynamic approach to AI-driven content strategies, as the effectiveness of visibility tactics can vary significantly across platforms. With AI's role in content creation expanding, the findings suggest that organizations must adapt their strategies to align with what their audiences are seeking, rather than relying on traditional media coverage as a guaranteed path to visibility.
