The United States is experiencing its most significant productivity surge in decades, though the extent to which artificial intelligence (AI) is driving this growth remains unclear. Companies are investing hundreds of billions of dollars in AI, betting on substantial productivity gains across the economy. Keith Waddell, CEO of Robert Half, cautioned that translating individual productivity gains into organizational outcomes is complex, noting a significant gap between the two.
The Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco reports that increased investment in labor and equipment has contributed 1.3 percentage points to annual productivity growth since early 2023, nearly double the contribution from the previous two decades. S&P Global estimates annual productivity gains at around 2%, but cannot isolate AI's specific impact. Productivity gains are more evident in companies actively developing AI, raising questions about whether these benefits will spread beyond tech giants and influence broader corporate financial results.
