Three inexperienced climbers attempted to summit Mt. Shasta in California earlier this week, relying on AI for planning their eight-hour ascent. The trip turned into a search-and-rescue operation after the group took 16 hours to reach the summit, leading to a 911 call and a subsequent rescue.
National Forest Service lead climbing ranger Nick Meyers noted that AI provided accurate guidance on time and food, but the hikers' poor decision-making and lack of mountain experience led to the incident. Meyers emphasized the importance of consulting real people or fact-checking AI information when entering risky environments.
The hikers also used AllTrails for navigation, but their phone battery died, forcing them to descend without proper supplies. Forest Service rangers eventually reached the group, but a helicopter rescue was not possible due to strong winds.
Chris Carr, co-owner of Shasta Mountain Guides, expressed concern over the increasing number of poorly prepared climbers on the mountain, urging them to follow the 'ten essentials' of mountaineering.
