AI is increasingly being used to detect and monitor wildfires, with researchers now exploring its potential to aid fire officials in deploying crews across multiple fires. Jason Fallon, U.S.
Wildland Fire Service division chief for wildland fire intelligence, stated that AI is already integrated into wildfire management, including monitoring, detection, and data transfer.
Léonard Boussioux, an information systems professor at the University of Washington, is part of a team investigating how machine learning and optimization can assist in prioritizing fire response efforts. Last year, the U.S. recorded 77,850 wildfires, a figure notably higher than the five- and 10-year averages.
Boussioux noted the difficulty in predicting which fire is likely to escalate. Fallon emphasized that AI aims to support, not replace, fire officials, who retain control over strategic decisions. Megafire Action CEO Matt Weiner added that AI alone cannot address the issue of large, destructive wildfires.
Researchers are developing advanced tools for wildfire decision-making, though their effectiveness depends on data quality and organization.
