Ai's role in uncovering PHP vulnerabilities sparks security concerns
Security teams worldwide scrambled this week to address newly disclosed PHP vulnerabilities, with millions of exploitation attempts reported within hours of their public release. Cloudflare analysis highlighted the rapid exploitation, attributed to AI tools that streamline the process. Despite the surge in attempts, no successful breaches have been confirmed, though many potential exploits appear ineffective. AI has played a pivotal role in uncovering practical exploitations for the PHP2Shell vulnerabilities, which were known for years but previously deemed too complex to exploit.
Researchers at Calif first identified the vulnerabilities in early August, using AI tools alongside human expertise. OpenAI and Wiz independently discovered the flaws using AI later. Sagi Tzadik of Wiz noted the vulnerability had been known to the PHP team for years but was not addressed due to its intractability for human attackers. Security experts warn that while AI accelerates vulnerability discovery, it does not introduce new threats but rather amplifies existing dynamics.
Jake Williams of Hunter Strategy emphasized that PHP’s extensive attack surface makes it uniquely vulnerable, though such low-hanging fruit may be limited. Ryan Austin of Calif stressed that no AI model can uncover all bugs with simple prompts. Niels Provos, a security engineer, expressed minimal concern, noting that finding this vulnerability required a highly skilled team and suggesting AI’s role may be overstated.
