Google DeepMind has launched AlphaGenome Atlas, a groundbreaking platform that predicts the molecular effects of 9 billion single-nucleotide variants across the human genome. The tool, available today, offers researchers an intuitive and free-to-use portal to explore genetic mutations and their impact on biology. The Atlas includes an AVI score, which combines predictions from AlphaGenome and AlphaMissense to rank variants by their potential impact. This resource has already been used by collaborators to identify key variants in rare disease research and uncover associations between genetic changes and common traits.
AlphaGenome Atlas is a 1-petabyte dataset, over 30 times larger than the AlphaFold Database. It enables scientists to link genetic variants to functional DNA sequences and provides high-resolution insights into molecular processes. Researchers like Gareth Hawkes have used the tool to identify non-coding variants linked to traits such as aging and body mass index. The project also highlights recurring DNA motifs that influence gene regulation, offering new layers of understanding of the human genome. The resource is accessible for non-commercial use today and will be available for commercial use on Google Cloud soon.
