Amazon's AI ambitions: a massive investment with uncertain returns
Amazon is investing $220 billion this year to build the physical infrastructure for AI, according to internal documents and statements from executives. AWS CFO John Felton joked at a September meeting that the company has become 'free cash flow negative' due to these investments. AI infrastructure leader Prasad Kalyanaraman confirmed the company's AI business is 'hugely free cash flow negative' and expects this to continue for 'the next couple of years.'
The scale of the investment is unprecedented, with AWS planning to deliver $5 billion of Nvidia GB300 racks in August, followed by $3 billion monthly. However, delays in power, equipment, or construction can leave billions in hardware waiting. Amazon's spokesperson said the company stages hardware near deployment sites to conserve cash, but the complexity of coordinating a sprawling industrial system remains a challenge.
Amazon faces significant hurdles, including securing enough electricity for its data centers and managing supply chain issues. The company has 44 gigawatts of data center capacity under development, more than double that of Google, Meta, and Microsoft. Despite these challenges, CEO Andy Jassy called AI a 'once in a lifetime opportunity' and emphasized the need for aggressive investment.
