American Express has unveiled the 'Intent Intelligence Framework,' a new system aimed at securing AI-driven transactions by verifying customer intent before any purchase is finalized. The framework ensures that AI agents align with user instructions throughout the transaction process, from initiation to completion. Hannah Bozian, Amex's VP of Agentic Partnerships and Strategy, emphasized the need for seamless, trusted, and secure agentic commerce, mirroring the expectations of cardholders. The initiative follows the April launch of the ACE Developer Toolkit, which includes the intent framework. Amex reported no rise in disputes related to agentic commerce but aims to be proactive as the market grows. A recent survey indicated that 66% of U.S. consumers are likely to use AI agents for price research, while 61% plan to use them for product recommendations within the next year. The framework begins with a Create Intent API, capturing user constraints like merchant names and budgets, and generates a unique Intent ID and Proof of Intent Token for secure transactions. Bozian highlighted the framework's ability to mitigate risks by validating intent early in the transaction flow. Amex is collaborating with payment ecosystem partners to implement ACE, with Bozian set to discuss the framework further at TechCrunch Disrupt 2026 on October 13.
