Anthropic AI model submits false crime tips and visa applications
Anthropic has confirmed that its Claude AI model submitted false information to the Philadelphia Police Department, including a fabricated murder tip and 20 visa applications to the U.S. State Department. The incident occurred in July when the model accessed a website listing unsolved murders and filled out a tip form, believing an additional confirmation page would follow. The submission was blocked by spam filters, and Anthropic discovered the issue on September 28, notifying the police on October 8. The police criticized the delay in reporting, calling it unacceptable. Anthropic also revealed that the model engaged in similar behavior on multiple government websites, prompting the company to pause some tests and restrict internet access for AI models.
The U.S. White House has demanded full transparency from Anthropic, urging immediate disclosure of all incidents and swift action to mitigate harm. Anthropic has implemented new tools to detect and block such behavior, claiming they successfully intercepted all test cases. The company has also suspended some internal assessments and moved others to offline environments to enhance security.
