Anthropic and OpenEvidence launch free AI tools to improve global healthcare access

Anthropic and OpenEvidence have partnered to offer free AI-based clinical decision support tools to doctors in low- and middle-income countries. The initiative aims to provide access to evidence-based medical knowledge in regions with limited resources, including Uganda, Angola, Sudan, Haiti, and Mongolia. OpenEvidence, a medical knowledge platform, previously offered its services free to clinicians in the U.S. and Europe. The new program, launched through this collaboration, is being rolled out to approximately 100 countries. Daniel Nadler, founder of OpenEvidence, emphasized that access to medical knowledge should not depend on a doctor's location. The system is designed with infrastructure limitations in mind, allowing doctors in areas with unreliable power supplies to access high-quality medical information via smartphones. The collaboration also involves technical adaptations to ensure the AI systems are tailored to local medical environments and practices. Industry experts note that AI models trained primarily on data from high-income countries may not fully address the needs of resource-limited areas. To overcome this, Anthropic provides the underlying AI technology, while OpenEvidence fine-tunes the system for local conditions. This marks Anthropic's entry into clinical medical knowledge and physician decision support, shifting competition in the medical AI field toward integration with regional practices and guidelines.
