Anthropic expands AI compute portfolio with multi-year deal and strategic partnerships

Anthropic has entered into a multi-year agreement with Nscale, a British AI infrastructure company, to rent approximately $45 billion in AI computing power. The deal, first reported by Bloomberg, involves Nscale’s flagship data center in West Virginia and will utilize Nvidia’s Vera Rubin chips, a new state-of-the-art chip system. The Vera Rubin system combines six different chips working in concert and is considered the cutting edge of chip design. The compute capacity is expected to start powering the AI lab’s services in late 2027, according to a source familiar with the deal. This agreement is part of a broader strategy by Anthropic to aggressively scale its compute capacity over the past eight months in an effort to better compete with rivals, most notably OpenAI. Earlier this month, Anthropic signed a $10 billion deal with Volta, an AI cloud startup founded in January, securing a six-year supply of cloud computing power from a data center in Norway. In July, the company also signed a $5 billion compute-related deal with AMD. A few months prior, in May, Anthropic revealed a large computing deal with SpaceX, which operates two data centers and reportedly provides the company with $1.25 billion worth of capacity each month. In April, Anthropic expanded its partnership with Amazon, gaining access to an additional 5 gigawatts of compute. The same month, the company also expanded its relationship with Google and Broadcom, adding even more power capacity. Anthropic is not alone in its pursuit of AI computing power. Major players such as Google, OpenAI, and Meta are also engaged in a similar race to acquire as much compute capacity as possible. The company’s recent deals highlight its strategic efforts to secure a competitive edge in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
