Anthropic expands chip development with former google TPU leader
Anthropic has announced the hiring of Amir Salek, a former senior executive at Google's TPU project, to lead its efforts in developing custom hardware. Salek was instrumental in the development of the first seven generations of TPU chips at Google before leaving in 2022.
He previously worked at NVIDIA and later held a senior role at Cereberus Capital Management. Anthropic currently sources its chips from multiple suppliers including NVIDIA, Google, and Amazon, but has recently signaled its intent to develop in-house chip technology. The company is also expanding its data center infrastructure to support its growth.
Competitors such as OpenAI are also pursuing similar strategies, with OpenAI recently unveiling its collaboration with Broadcom on the custom chip 'Jalapeño,' set for deployment later this year.
