Anthropic expands cybersecurity efforts with new initiative for critical infrastructure
Anthropic has launched a new cybersecurity initiative aimed at bolstering the defenses of critical infrastructure, including power grids and water utilities. The program, known as the Critical Infrastructure Defense Program, will provide the company's most advanced AI models, on-site engineers, and threat research to organizations responsible for securing these systems. Anthropic is also introducing a free AI-powered vulnerability scanning tool for open-source software projects, called OSS Scanner. This move follows growing concerns about the increasing sophistication of cyberattacks, which are being amplified by the availability of AI tools to both defenders and attackers. While the initiative highlights the potential of AI in enhancing cybersecurity, challenges remain in safely testing and deploying fixes without disrupting essential services.
The effort places Anthropic among other AI developers, including OpenAI, who are seeking to equip cyber defenders with cutting-edge models. However, experts caution that ensuring the safe implementation of these technologies remains a significant hurdle, particularly given the complexity and critical nature of infrastructure systems.
