Anthropic introduces new standard for AI agents to operate physical devices

Anthropic has launched a research preview of the Model Hardware Standard (MHS), a shared specification designed to enable AI agents to safely interact with physical devices. The initiative aims to address challenges in integrating disparate hardware systems, such as lab equipment, by standardizing the driver layer between an operating system and a device. This standard allows for quick setup, reducing the time required from weeks or months to just hours or minutes. The MHS provides a small set of primitives, including read and write functions, discovery capabilities, and safety limits. It also incorporates non-numeric data, such as the weight of a robot arm, through natural language tags. Control mechanisms include the Model Context Protocol, a CLI, and code files, making the standard model-agnostic. Several organizations, including Genentech and QuEra Computing, have reported significant improvements in automation efficiency and accuracy using MHS.
