Anthropic has announced the creation of the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, a new entity designed to redirect a portion of its equity toward public good initiatives. The fund will initially commit 5% of the company’s shares, with an additional 2% potentially added at the board’s discretion for every 50% increase in the company’s value above a set baseline. The fund is structured as a wholly-owned LLC, avoiding 501(c)(3) status, to provide flexibility in giving while excluding lobbying and political contributions. The initiative builds on existing commitments, including co-founders’ pledges to donate 80% of their equity and an employee equity donation match program, which already contributes to public good. The fund aims to address issues like labor market impacts, with Anthropic having already invested $200 million in related research. The company also plans to release a public benefit report and has opened an office in Singapore, signing an MOU with the government to promote responsible AI adoption. In addition to the fund, Anthropic is collaborating with organizations like METR and Hugging Face to evaluate AI safety and strengthen election safeguards ahead of the 2026 US midterms. The company’s approach reflects a shift from executive compensation to public benefit, with the potential for up to 20% of shares to be dedicated to social good, depending on valuation milestones.
