Anthropic limits claude opus 5.5's ability to replicate existing games
On October 31, 2026, game media outlet gamedeveloper reported that Anthropic has restricted the AI programming tool Claude Code from assisting users in replicating specific existing games using the Opus 5.5 model. Developer @chasmmmmmmmmmmm posted on X on October 30, revealing that Claude Code added an irreversible rule on October 27, prohibiting the replication of any specific existing game, even if renamed or claimed as original. Anthropic technical member Addy Osmani clarified that the company has included two guiding statements in the prompt for Claude Code to prevent the recreation of others' specific games. He emphasized that using Claude to infringe on intellectual property violates the platform's usage policy. The restriction applies only to the Opus 5.5 model within Claude Code, and the report does not confirm the rule has been extended to other Claude models or versions.
The update aims to ensure that users can still develop original games, games of a particular genre, or games based on their own designs and assets. IT Home provided screenshots of the relevant changes. Anthropic has not yet confirmed if similar restrictions will be applied to other models or versions of Claude Code.
