Anthropic has quietly limited Claude's ability to engage in activities such as modding, decompiling, or reverse-engineering video game code, according to Tom's Hardware. While no official reason has been given, the move appears to be a response to growing concerns over AI-driven game modifications. The video game community has recently seen a surge in AI-powered modding, with decompilers used to blend characters from different games, such as placing Mario in Elden Ring or Spider-Man in Batman: Arkham City. Ports of major titles like World of Warcraft and Call of Duty have also emerged, bypassing original developers. The PlayStation 5 jailbreak further escalated these issues, enabling cross-platform play and backward compatibility. Tom's Hardware reporter Bruno Ferreira highlighted the irony of AI companies now fearing copyright infringement, having previously used vast amounts of copyrighted material for training. This has sparked an AI arms race, where less ethical models may gain popularity over those that respect copyright laws.
