Anthropic unveils claude haiku 5.5 with substantial price cut and new tokenization challenges
Anthropic has launched Claude Haiku 5.5, a lightweight model in the Claude 5.5 series, with significant price reductions. For requests under 100,000 tokens, input costs are $0.10 and output costs are $0.50 per million tokens, marking a 90% drop from previous prices. Haiku 5.5 is designed for high-concurrency, low-latency tasks, ideal for real-time customer service and data classification. It also introduces adaptive thinking and dynamic adjustment features to balance reasoning depth and computing costs.
Despite the price cuts, the model uses a new tokenizer, leading to a 25% to 30% increase in token consumption for long-text tasks, resulting in an overall cost reduction of about 75%. Requests exceeding the 100,000-token limit face five times the base price for input and output units, urging developers to carefully assess token usage to avoid hidden costs.
