Anthropic's AI discovery sparks debate in gene editing field

Anthropic, a leading AI company, claims its large language model, Claude, has identified a novel enzyme system with properties similar to CRISPR, the Nobel Prize-winning gene-editing tool. The discovery, made by 950 Claude agents in 21.5 hours, has sparked mixed reactions among scientists. Fyodor Urnov, a gene-editing expert at UC Berkeley, praised the finding, while Le Cong, a Stanford professor, expressed skepticism, noting the experiments are still pending. Anthropic emphasized that the discovery is not the end of its work, as the system's function remains unclear. The AI model was prompted to search genomic databases for reverse transcriptases, proteins that copy RNA into DNA, leading to the identification of an 'unusual' family of enzymes, dubbed ART. Seth Shipman of Gladstone Institutes acknowledged the novelty of the method but cautioned against attributing the discovery solely to AI. Jason Gill, a microbiologist, noted the enzyme was previously identified in 2021, but the AI's ability to detect surrounding repeats was novel. Cong highlighted the potential of AI in large-data projects, though he cautioned against overestimating its capabilities.
