Anthropic's hiring process focuses on ethical values and mission over profit

According to a report by Axios, Anthropic, a leading artificial intelligence research lab, includes a cultural interview in its hiring process to assess the values of job candidates. During these interviews, applicants are asked direct questions about their priorities if there is a conflict between the company's mission and financial gain. One such question posed to candidates was: 'If the company ever had to abandon its AI business for safety reasons, leading to a stock price of zero, how would you feel?' An anonymous source shared that they were honest in their response, expressing disappointment at the stock drop but emphasizing their commitment to creating social value and maintaining ethical standards. However, the interviewer did not seem to approve of this answer. Another former employee noted that while interviewers use a set of standardized questions, they do not follow them verbatim. This explains why some candidates recall questions about stock price collapse, while others remember discussions around balancing business interests and safety. The interview process is described as highly standardized, with salaries being final offers that are not subject to negotiation. Candidates are also asked to discuss past ethical dilemmas and how they resolved them. Two former employees stated that the stock price question was not part of the interview process from the beginning. However, some job applicants as early as 2025 encountered similar questions. Danilla Amodei, co-founder and president of Anthropic, confirmed that cultural interviews have been part of the company's process since its inception, though the specific 'mission versus money' question may have been added later. According to Bloomberg, some Anthropic applicants have spent thousands of dollars on private coaching or mock interviews with top AI company employees. Aline Lerner, founder of the interview simulation platform Interviewing.io, noted that investing several thousand dollars to increase a candidate's salary by $200,000 is a clear financial calculation.
