Anthropic's internal AI consumption value surpasses employee compensation costs
Anthropic has reached a significant operational milestone, as detailed in its IPO filing, where the value of its internal AI usage, calculated using customer retail pricing, now exceeds the company's monthly employee compensation expenses, excluding stock awards.
This internal AI expenditure surged dramatically, increasing over 250-fold between January and September. The company noted that in April, the value of Claude AI used internally surpassed monthly compensation costs.
This trend highlights a shift in the tech industry, where AI usage is becoming a major factor. Anthropic's figures illustrate this, showing that Claude authored over 90% of the code added to its software in September, coinciding with revenue growing much faster than headcount. This development challenges the long-held assumption that human talent remains the sole most valuable asset in Silicon Valley.
