Anthropic's IPO filing shows AI labs can be profitable at scale
Anthropic's recent IPO filing has demonstrated that AI labs can achieve profitability, with the company reporting $11.6 billion in revenue for Q2 2026, a 1,368% increase from the same period in 2025. Its operating profit reached $974 million, with an 8% margin, while adjusted operating profit hit 19%. Mark Mahaney of Evercore ISI noted that 'frontier-lab unit economics can turn positive at scale.'
The company's efficiency is highlighted by a 1,200% revenue increase over the year ending September 30, alongside a 170% rise in employee count, leading to a jump in revenue per employee from $1.4 million to over $6.6 million. Anthropic also reported a broad customer base, with over 11,900 clients generating at least $100,000 in annual revenue, compared to over 950 a year earlier. No single customer accounted for more than 10% of revenue during the first nine months of 2026.
Despite its strong financial position, with over $130 billion in cash and short-term investments, Mahaney warned that much of Anthropic's revenue is based on usage rather than long-term contracts, and some computing agreements require minimum payments regardless of usage. The company also faces increased spending as it shifts toward leasing AI chips and operating its own infrastructure.
