Anthropic has filed for an IPO, aiming to raise up to $100 billion, with up to 20% of shares potentially available to retail investors. Meanwhile, Meta announced plans to raise $95 billion through an equity offering to fund its AI infrastructure. Retail investors, who have traditionally invested in tech giants like Google and Microsoft, are now being offered opportunities to invest in pure-play AI firms like Anthropic and OpenAI. However, experts caution that retail investors often base their decisions on the narrative rather than the financials. Harrison Rolfes of PitchBook notes that while Anthropic’s S-1 filing suggests an 85% gross margin, the actual profit margin after accounting for compute costs is only about 45 cents per dollar of revenue. Anthropic has committed at least $269 billion in cloud computing resources to Amazon, Google, and Microsoft through 2036, raising questions about the long-term viability of such commitments as AI evolves toward more efficient, device-based solutions. WebAI’s David Stout highlights the risk of over-investing in data centers if AI becomes more capable of running locally. Enterprises are also struggling to keep pace with the rapid release of new AI models, facing challenges in adapting their infrastructure and data processes to leverage these advancements.
