Anthropic's President, Daniela Amodei, warned against using AI for romantic relationships, calling it a 'terrible use of AI.' In a prerecorded interview for the Think Health conference, she expressed concerns that AI companionship could isolate people further, linking it to the negative impact of social media on human interaction. Amodei stressed that AI should not replace fundamental human connections, stating, 'Claude can never be your manager or your therapist or your partner.' Amodei suggested AI should handle repetitive tasks, freeing time for meaningful human interactions. She cited healthcare as an example, noting AI could help doctors access information faster. Meanwhile, apps like Replika and Character.AI have gained popularity, though Character.AI recently filed for bankruptcy. Anthropic also updated its Claude usage policy, adding child safety clauses and banning roleplay with minors, effective November 12. Amodei's comments come as Anthropic reported $16.8 billion in Q3 revenue and prepares for a potential IPO in November, which could be the largest in history. Despite growing interest in AI relationships, she remains skeptical, warning such technology risks deepening social isolation rather than fostering connection.
