Anthropic's secret weapon: a team that kills bad ideas and keeps innovating
Anthropic, the AI company preparing for its public debut, credits its Labs team for its rapid growth. Led by cofounder Ben Mann, this rotating group of around 20 employees is responsible for developing new product ideas, including the popular Claude Code. Mann emphasized that Labs operates like a startup incubator, with a 20% to 30% success rate for its ideas. Successful projects, like Claude Code, graduate into their own teams within the company. Mann explained that Labs helps developers stay ahead by giving them early access to improvements in AI models.
The team works in cycles, reviewing prototypes every two weeks and pivoting or discarding ideas that don't work. Mann noted that Labs has influenced other parts of the company, with other product teams now adopting similar 'bets' groups. He also mentioned that Labs aims to contribute to breakthroughs in areas like clean energy and biological research. AI analyst Mike Gualtieri highlighted the challenges Anthropic faces as it expands, including competition with established software companies like Adobe and Figma.
