Anthropic has released new research detailing three distinct economic pathways that AI could follow over the next four years. The study highlights scenarios ranging from a modest impact akin to the internet to an extreme case with no historical precedent. According to the research, the next one to two years may provide early signals on which path is unfolding, though economic shocks could obscure these signals before 2030. In the most benign scenario, AI would account for 4% of tasks economy-wide by 2030, boosting GDP by 1.6% without significant job displacement. Anthropic economist Peter McCrory emphasized that these scenarios are not predetermined. The study also notes that AI could shift income toward investors, widening the gap between workers and investors. In more extreme scenarios, white-collar employment could fall by over 20%, while political obstacles such as opposition to data centers or calls to pause AI development are not included in the analysis. The research outlines how AI could reshape income distribution, with the most extreme scenario showing a significant shift toward investors. While the study provides a framework for understanding potential economic impacts, it acknowledges that other factors, such as political resistance, could influence the actual trajectory of AI's economic influence.
