Apple has unveiled a new feature called Apple Reference Image, designed to verify the authenticity of photos taken with the iPhone 18 Pro. The feature captures signed sensor data from the main camera sensor, which is then processed by Apple’s Private Cloud Compute service to create an 'unalterable image' accessible in the Photos app. This reference image can be used to compare with other versions of a photo to detect any alterations. Apple has likened the reference image to a 'digital negative.' The feature will initially be available in the Photos app, but Apple is also providing APIs for developers to integrate the functionality into their apps. Additionally, Apple will support the SynthID standard to help users identify AI-generated or altered images. The announcement was made during Apple’s Surprise and Shine event. The company emphasized the importance of the feature for photojournalists and photographers, highlighting its role in maintaining the integrity of photographic content in an era dominated by AI-generated media.
