Apple launches anti-fake image feature with iPhone 18 pro and pro max

Apple has introduced a new feature called Apple Reference Image, designed to combat AI-generated fake images, as part of its iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max devices. The feature, detailed in a blog post released on September 15, allows for pixel-level annotation of real image data and provides hardware-level verification to ensure authenticity. The Apple Reference Image operates in an optional mode known as Reference mode, which binds a timestamp to the image and signs key metadata, such as focal length and digital zoom, using the Secure Enclave Processor. This creates an unforgeable 'digital negative' that enhances the credibility of the image. The system also provides encrypted lower and upper bound timestamps for the shooting time, ensuring the accuracy and verifiability of the image's time. Apple further integrates this feature with its private cloud service to maintain tamper-proof validation throughout the entire process, while safeguarding user privacy. This innovation is intended to support news organizations and evidence preservation scenarios by offering a trusted source of images, making it harder to tamper with compared to traditional post-processing methods.
