Arm's CEO highlights ai's potential in cancer research amid chip shortages
Arm's CEO, Rene Haas, emphasized AI's potential to revolutionize cancer research, predicting it could lead to cures within our lifetimes. However, he warned that the semiconductor industry faces significant challenges in meeting the demand for computing power required to advance AI applications.
Haas, who has led Arm since 2022, noted that the current supply of chips is constrained, with data centers consuming a large portion of available resources. He stated that building new fabrication plants is a lengthy and costly process, with costs reaching tens of billions of dollars and construction taking two to three years.
Meanwhile, other chip executives, such as Micron's Manish Bhatia and Qualcomm's Cristiano Amon, have also raised concerns about memory shortages impacting the broader tech industry.
Data center construction has surged, with over 1,400 facilities built or approved by the end of 2025, though public opposition to their environmental impact remains high.
