Barclays expands AI integration with Anthropic to enhance operations and customer experience
Barclays, a leading British bank, is deepening its collaboration with Anthropic to integrate secure AI systems across its global operations. The bank aims to expand the use of Claude, Anthropic's AI model, to boost software development, modernize legacy systems, and improve operational efficiency. By the end of 2026, 50% of Barclays' developers are expected to adopt Claude Code, with a majority of software engineers using it by 2027. Anne Marie Darling, Group Co-Chief Operating Officer at Barclays, emphasized that the initiative is about transforming how work is done, enhancing customer experiences, and building a more efficient organization.
The partnership includes tools like the Colleague Knowledge Assistant, which has been live since 2025 and now supports over 16,000 employees, handling more than one million searches. In Barclays' Global Markets division, Claude models streamline client enquiry processing, managing approximately 120,000 emails daily. Craig Bright, also a Group Co-Chief Operating Officer, highlighted how AI is reshaping software engineering and cybersecurity, enabling Barclays to modernize platforms and focus on complex challenges.
Paul Smith, Chief Commercial Officer at Anthropic, noted that the collaboration sets a high standard for AI deployment, with Claude now assisting 16,000 colleagues and processing 120,000 emails daily. Anthropic also announced a new life sciences research group, where Claude discovered a novel enzyme system with CRISPR-like properties, under the Life Sciences Verification Program.
