Bill gates advocates for human-reserved jobs amid AI advancements

In a new essay, Bill Gates suggests that governments may need to intentionally limit the role of AI and robots in certain jobs, defying historical trends of technological progress. Gates argues that AI could eventually outperform humans in a wide range of tasks, making retraining displaced workers insufficient. He proposes the concept of 'Human Reserved' jobs—occupations or tasks that society deliberately assigns to humans even when AI or robots could perform them. Gates highlights examples such as childcare and jury service, where humans are clearly better suited, but also suggests there should be room for humans in areas where AI also has a role. He envisions two forms of Human Reserved jobs. Additionally, Gates recommends taxing AI tokens and robots to reduce the economic incentives for companies to automate human work. However, the idea raises significant practical questions, including which jobs qualify, who decides, how to prevent companies from circumventing the rules, and how to protect domestic jobs from foreign competitors. Gates has also been calculating how much employment could be preserved through such measures. Overall, he acknowledges that AI will likely destroy many jobs, but believes strategic interventions could mitigate some of the impact.
