Bill Gates launches global AI coalition to promote inclusivity and language access

Bill Gates unveiled a new coalition during the Gates Foundation’s Goalkeepers event, aiming to enhance AI inclusivity by expanding language accessibility. The coalition, comprising 60 organizations including Anthropic, Google, and OpenAI, seeks to reach over 3 billion people within five years. Gates emphasized the need for AI to address global inequality, citing the importance of integrating human values into AI development. The initiative follows a $1 billion commitment to AI-focused efforts to improve health, education, and farming practices globally. Lewis-Jong highlighted the issue of internet data not reflecting cultural diversity. The Gates Foundation will oversee the coalition’s governance, with a secretariat tracking commitments and addressing gaps. Google’s Project Vaani, collecting speech data across India, underscores the need for dialect-specific data collection. Anthropic’s CEO acknowledged the company’s lag in supporting African languages, stressing the importance of language accuracy for global health and education outcomes. The coalition’s work is seen as critical despite calls from some AI companies to slow down advanced model development.
