Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist Bill Gates has proposed taxing robots to ensure financial support for workers displaced by artificial intelligence. He argues that if AI replaces human jobs, the government should impose a tax on robots similar to that on human workers. This tax would fund social programs like Social Security and Medicare, while also maintaining government revenue. Gates believes that taxing AI tokens could slow the pace of automation and fund retraining programs.
Gates has long warned about the impact of AI on employment, particularly in white-collar jobs. He recently stated that blue-collar jobs may soon face similar challenges. While he acknowledges that current robot technology lags behind AI systems, he warns that human-like robots are advancing faster than people realize. Gates has supported the idea of a robot tax since 2017, calling it a necessary part of addressing AI's challenges.
