Biotech investment resists AI market shifts
Despite the AI sector's surge in funding, biotech investment has remained stable, with global funding hovering between $36 billion and $40 billion in 2026. Crunchbase data indicates this year is on track to stay within that range. While overall venture capital reached record levels in the first half of 2026, much of the capital flowed into generative AI companies, leaving biotechs with a respectable share. AI-focused biotechs received over $6 billion in funding, with Isomorphic Labs securing the largest round of $2.1 billion in a Series B. Other notable financings include Earendil Labs’ $787 million and Chai Discovery’s $400 million. Non-AI biotechs like NewLimit also raised significant funds, with $435 million in a Series C. Biotech startups also saw early IPOs, such as Kailera Therapeutics and Kardigan, while later-stage companies like Parabilis Medicines raised substantial Series F funding. Additionally, at least 12 biotech companies achieved billion-dollar M&A exits, reflecting continued healthy investment and exits in the sector.
Crunchbase data highlights that seed and early-stage funding dominate the biotech landscape, comprising over half of all investment. This trend persists despite later-stage companies pursuing IPOs earlier in their lifecycle. While the biotech sector remains less exuberant than the AI boom, the growing intersection of AI and biotech may drive increased enthusiasm in the coming quarters.
